Our elementary school is in a low economic area where the PE program was just reinstated 2 years ago. Our county is year after year considered one of the most unhealthy counties in the state of North Carolina. Our students here at TCES come from a wide range of economically diverse backgrounds, but close to 100 percent of our school's children qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Our area was severely affected by Hurricane Florence. Flooding and water damage impacted several of our classrooms including my gym which forced half of my gym floor to be unusable. Many of my students lost their homes or had to be relocated due to the storm.
Our students are happy, affectionate children who look forward to coming to Physical Education class every day.
Since our countywide PE program is considerably new, our PE teachers are lacking equipment and materials that can help our children be more physically fit and better aware of healthy life choices. Our after school sports programs help keep students off the streets while providing positive experiences in our athletics program.
My Project
This hockey equipment will allow my students to be exposed to a game that most of them have never seen or played before.
Our elementary school is in a predominantly low socioeconomic area that makes buying new physical education equipment for our school very difficult.
The hockey sticks and goals will give me a chance to bring a whole new world to my physical education classes, and give students the opportunity to grow and be successful at something they never dreamed would be possible.
I integrate technology a lot with PE. I have a interactive touch panel that allows me to draw diagrams and show videos to model for students how to perform a certain skill. With team sports especially having an eye in the sky will allow me to show proper spacing and technique in our activities. The drone will allow my students and I to record lessons from the sky to show afterwards and will bring even more excitement to my gymnasium.
Our school and physical education equipment was pretty heavily damaged from Hurricane Florence and this equipment would mean a lot to all of us. While the storm might have flooded the gym, ruined our floor, and caused havoc with mold, it didn't stop our dedication to providing the best education possible. Thank you so much for your help and support of our community!
