My students need field guides and binoculars to help them observe and identify bird species in our area. They love getting out into nature to see what is going on!
Our school is comprised of grades 4-8 and is located in a small rural community in Southern Illinois. About 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunches and they come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
My students are incredibly curious 6th graders, who love to investigate and learn new things.
These students really enjoy being able to explore the world around them. It is terrific when they are able to connect the dots and develop a deeper understanding of our science topics!
My Project
How much time do most kids spend outside observing or interacting with nature?? My students are excited to get out and discover all of the wondrous phenomena that nature holds for us. One great way is by observing and identifying birds. We have a large wooded area next to our school as well as grassy field and track -- a perfect location for some bird watching.
This equipment will allow my students to observe and explore our ecosystem, taking the time to stop and watch nature.
Initially, we will look at general ways to identify birds such as their overall size, shape, and color. Then we will look more closely at the different characteristics such as beak size and shape and specific markings. After a bit of practice, students will become much more observant and will refine their concentration, observation, and reasoning skills. Using a field guide will allow them to make positive identifications. Then as they begin to watch each bird, they can try to figure out the hows and whys of bird behavior.
Enjoying nature at a young age really helps them become more well-rounded individuals and allows them to develop their curiosity and science skills.
