"The Maker Movement is about moving from consumption to creation and turning knowledge into action." - Laura Fleming
My students want to get hands-on with the physical world around them and our 3D printers.
My students are fourth through sixth graders in a suburban public school.
They come from all walks of life, but are all enthusiastic about learning in the STEM Lab. They are creative and curious, and I am always looking for new ways to engage them. My kids are extremely excited about the 3D printers we have in the lab, and they are always asking about being able to create models with it. I want to bring in new ways to use the 3D printers in an educational but fun manner.
My Project
I am requesting 1 3-D scanner for use with our 3-D printers.
We currently have two 3D printers in our STEM Lab. This is our first year with them, and the kids are loving it. We've been learning about 3D modeling and design using programs like Tinkercad, and the kids are hooked.
A common question across all grades is if there's any way to make 3D copies of existing objects. Many students would love to be able to scan physical objects and import them into a modeling program to modify. It would allow them to start with a more complex model and allow their creativity to flourish.
A 3D scanner is also a wonderful tool for the staff. With it, they would be able to scan existing classroom models and manipulatives and create physical copies of them. This allows more students access to the physical materials used in learning.
I want my students to be able to unleash their creative side.
I want to see what they can create from the starting point of a familiar and favorite object. I want teachers to be able to share models and manipulatives with more students. I want to make learning fun for my students. With a 3D scanner, we can expand our use of the 3D printers and continue to grow a generation that loves to create as well as consume.
