"If students aren't learning the way you teach, then you need to teach the way they learn." This was a vital quote that powered my classroom this previous school year in which both my students and I realized the value of iPods and education.
In our small town we have a wonderful Intermediate school of about 350 students who all come from various economic and social backgrounds.
All of the students have a willingness to learn through technology, through which I plan on helping in my classroom.
My Project
Through the use of iPods and the ease of the track pad on our laptop, students will be able to design their own audio and video to demonstrate knowledge of concepts learned in class, particularly mathematical concepts and reading fluency. For example, iPod Touches can assist students in first reading a book then recording, analyzing, and perfecting their fluency. They will also have the ability to exhibit their understanding of place value by recording a model of numerical value, then reverting back to their example as numbers get progressively higher, ranging from 1-999,999. The use of iPod Touches in my classroom will also be beneficial to students because I can differentiate instruction through an iTunes playlist which can distinguish content for all learning modalities, especially GT and Special Education students. I can also use it for remediation, therefore recording lessons for students who were absent, pulled out of class, or simply needing supplemental support.
Teachers today truly need to respond to the technological age.
One day, my students will work at jobs where they need to have the skills to advance and many of those skills start in the classroom. I know that through the use of iPod Touches in my classroom, my students will be able to use various learning modalities to cultivate their minds and the iPods will also stimulate students who normally don't have a yearning for learning.
