Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With a class full of students who are growing up with MP3 players and texting, keeping them engaged at school is a challenge. When we bring in the tools they are familiar with and use them to teach with, we have far more effective results.
My students are from a Title One school and have Number One attitudes!
My children are amazing and rock! It is such a joy to spend my days working with children who want to learn and give their personal best. Many of the children do not have cool technology at home and have never worked with an iPod. My students are curious and fun, yet understand how to get serious. We are able to do so many hands-on activities that all levels of ability are engaged. This tool would be one more method to maintain high levels of engagement. My students are deserving, They work hard to reach the high levels of expectation asked of them, and I would love to reward them with this!
My Project
Imagine, sitting in class as an ELL learner, the class doing an activity about the Solar System...you know all the terms in Spanish, but not in English. You ask for the iPod and use the Spanish English Glossary to quickly catch up with the class.
OR
Imagine, being the "cool" student in class that is scared to look dumb in front of others...you need help on something but do not want to ask. You can be cool and ask to use the iPod to look something up, so you are in class, using an iPod, but learning!
The iPod is like a mini-computer with apps that children can learn with. It is not economical to get lots of computers for children to be able to use for individual research, but iPods are possible.
Once we have the iPod we can gear individual lessons for students to use having the cool tool to use as an aide.
While there are other ways to get the information the students need, this is one way that the students will want to use. Getting the students engaged is half the battle.
Getting the students involved in what we are doing is key.
It is sometimes hard to get students to focus on our topics, but when we use cool technology the students zoom in. Instead of the teacher working harder, items like these let us all work smarter. The students will LEARN and be able to see vivid images of topics they look up. Learning is priceless.
