Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach middle school students that are on the autism spectrum. Most of my students come from low income households. My students range from non verbal students who are in our self-contained classroom to students in general education classes that come to us for social skills, p.e., and when the need arises.
Many students with autism have poor motor skills and coordination.
Many of my students fall in this category. We are looking to replace a few worn out items that my students have come to rely on as part of their daily routine.
My Project
Students with autism often have difficulty with motor skills. These items will help the students improve on these skills. Many of our students have difficulty cutting and with these scissors the students will be able to work on these skills and hopefully, one day be able to use the scissors and cut independently.
Along with many other challenges students with autism often have difficulty with posture, coordination, and motor planning.
Our students are not able to participate in general education p.e. but we are able to take them. Unfortunately the playground balls they love have seen better days. Just from playing catch we have seen an improvement in some of our students motor skills.
