My Students

I teach at a therapeutic special education school serving approximately 82 students who have been unable to succeed in a general education setting due to intense emotional and behavioral needs. 100% of my students receive free lunch, making our school one of the highest poverty schools in the district. Some of our students are in foster care, experiencing homelessness, and nearly all have faced great struggles in their lives.

Our school is located in an old warehouse, but I am determined to help my students reach beyond their current circumstances, with the hope of them eventually returning back to their neighborhood schools and into the general education environment.

It is often very heartbreaking to teach children as young as five who have already been pulled out of their neighborhood schools to attend a school for at-risk children with mental health issues and severe behavioral problems due to trauma. However, because my students are so young, I am confident that my classroom can steer their behavior and academics in the right direction.

Despite so many hardships, my students are incredible children with boundless potential. Most of them have faced difficult home lives and traumas that greatly affect their behavior.

My Project

Our school is a Setting IV Special Education School for children with intense mental health and behavioral needs. The primary reason our students are here is because of physically aggressive behaviors toward other students and staff. In order to teach them the correct way of behaving, we provide them with a daily social skills class taught by a mental health practitioner.

We currently do not have the necessary materials for our social skills classes to be effective.

Our students often act out, and we so desperately need to change this. We strongly believe that the social skills classes truly make a difference.

The materials we have requested will improve my students' overall mental health, wellness, and mindfulness, making for a calmer, emotionally healthier classroom.

The Apples to Apples and Twister games will provide fun opportunities to build teamwork and unity as a class. My students struggle GREATLY with working/playing together, so providing fun opportunities to practice this skill will be amazing. The Big Jumbo Playing Cards are something my students are super excited about-we already have jumbo UNO cards, and currently this UNO game is one of their favorite things to do. It is cool to see students try to manage their large cards, keeping them hidden from adjacent players. The Steven's Universe Season 1 DVD set celebrates diversity, and the characters teach the children how to interact with peers in healthy ways. My students LOVE movies!

I teach literacy, financial literacy through our school store (which is part of our social skills/mental health curriculum), and social skills. These items will help my students improve in all of these academic areas.
