My Students
I currently teach thirty energetic, eager-to-learn second graders at an inner-city school located in Illinois. My students come from a variety of cultures, across a wide range of income levels located within the school's neighborhood and from other neighborhoods across the city.
Like most second graders, my students are extremely curious and love to figure out the world around them through open-ended exploration of materials, topics, ideas, and their surroundings.
I am constantly amazed by the thoughts they have, the way they express themselves, how they work to understand and communicate their experiences with one another.
My Project
Our classroom is extremely lucky to have two teachers, but what we don't have is another learning space so that each teacher can simultaneously meet with groups of our diverse students across mutliple subjects throughout the day.
If our classroom had another rug, easel, and chair, both teachers could teach parallel or differentiated mini-lessons, meet with larger groups of students, and have room for two teacher-guided centers at once.
Students would also be able to utilize this space during independent and partner work times as well.
Having a co-teacher in a classroom is a wonderful resource for all of the students and it is important for each teacher to have a space to teach these diverse learners.
