As a kindergarten teacher, I set the stage for the rest of a child's school experience. This year, I am teaching a group of "advanced" students. My school is located in the outskirts of the "big city" in South Florida--in a rural community. Within my class I have a group of diverse backgrounds, including students who speak English as a second language. My biggest challenge will be to enrich their life experiences and challenge their thinking. Therefore, my goal this year is to deliver a classroom learning environment that offers authentic and real-world applications. I am also striving to integrate science into my reading block. By doing so, I hope that my students will become engaged in learning and put forth their best effort every day.
My Project
In our first kindergarten units, we will be exploring our five senses and how to become a lifelong reader. Many kids are reluctant readers when it comes to independent reading time. But by combining the five senses and reading unit, I can engage the students with a plethora of books to explore. The students will become captivated by the sights, smells and textures and sounds found within the AMAZING world of books with your help! This year, I am seeking help to grow my library of books that will engage the students and stimulate their sense of sight, touch, hearing and smell.
