I am working with a terrific group of students who want to learn, but do not have the resources to access the general curriculum. My class is an energetic group of 7th grade students who all have special needs.

A number of student families in my classroom have experienced financial loss due to the current economic times. Several parents have lost jobs, have had to switch to lower paying jobs, or just do not have the "extra money" to buy items such as calculators for their children. Our school does not provide calculators for use outside of the math classroom and as a special education teacher, I am in desperate need of this essential tool for each and every one of my students. Currently twelve students are sharing one calculator.

I have requested 20 calculators with the teacher caddy so that this necessary tool will be available for use in my classroom. I would also allow students to borrow the calculators on a nightly basis so that they can complete whatever homework remains at home. These students suffer from various educational disabilities. They are the students that need the most resources to grow and learn. Right now, I do not have those resources to offer them.

Your help will make it possible for my students to work on an equal playing field with their typical peers. Having a disability and experiencing poverty should not be the reason students are not making progress. I challenge my students everyday to be successful, to do the best that they have to offer. Your support would help me to get them to achieve that goal.
