It Is Heating Up in Physics Class!

Help me give my students thermometers and cups for calorimeters in order to study heat transfer.

My Students

My students are all young scientists beginning to discover the wonders of physics and chemistry. We love to explore new concepts and ask questions together. If you came into my classroom, you might see us trying to shoot marbles through a "ring of fire" or titrating juice to determine the amount of acid.

My students are wonderful, curious, young people.

They work hard to support each other, and we love to have fun while learning physics and computer science. They are dedicated to their community, and each student at our school commits to performing at least 25 hours of community service each year. Over 70% of students in our district have a first language other than English, and nearly 65% are economically disadvantaged. This means our students face barriers to learning physics and chemistry far beyond just the difficulty of tackling such challenging subject matter.

My Project

I love being able to ground a new unit in a hands-on, inquiry-based experience for my students. When we start studying heat, that means that we need to be able to measure the temperature of objects! These thermometers and cups will allow us to create calorimeters and develop a deep understanding of heat transfer. Through experimentation, students will develop an understanding of the relationship between specific heat capacity, mass, and thermal energy.

It is often challenging for students to believe how much thermal energy it takes to heat up water and how little it takes to heat up metals like copper or iron - these thermometers allow them to make those measurements and come up with those conclusions themselves.

I am excited for the data analysis, argumentation, and concept understanding that these materials will enable.
