Help me give my students a soft place to land should they end up in the COVID-19 isolation room clinic. Once in isolation we can’t leave, I need ice to cool the student’s fevers down.
I am the school nurse for a Title I, an inner-city, public school in the heart of Dallas, TX. Often times we are the only medical care some students receive throughout the year. Students rely on the school clinic for medical care and emotional well-being.
We hope to impact the lives of our students as much as they impact ours.
We see students with varying degrees of medical needs including Type 1 diabetes, spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, seizures, sickle cell anemia down to eczema, allergies, and daily medication administration. Our students with lifelong illness or disease never let their conditions define them. It is my wish to provide our students with the best possible care, with the best possible outcome.
My Project
My school is creating a makeshift isolation room/clinic for possible COVID cases. Should any student end up in the "isolation" room, there will not be any creature comforts. If this situation were to occur, I would like for there to be at least a soft mat and pillow for them to rest until they are picked up from school.
Clinic beds and cots are very pricey and impractical during these uncertain times.
Should things become a more permanent situation the school will have to provide a more effective set-up, but for now I believe a few floor mats and some pillows will suffice. And should the idea of isolation rooms subside, the gym or the kinder classrooms could always inherit the mats afterwards.
Once in isolation I cannot leave for risk of spreading the virus. If my students have high fevers the ice will allow me to cool them down until their parents arrive.
