At our school, we attract students with a wide-wage of interests, personalities, and backgrounds. We are located in Springville, but our students come from as far south as Santaquin and as far north as Pleasant Grove. Our students are out-of-the-box thinkers and our school-wide project-based learning model centers around students being able to problem solve real-life applications in their learning experience. Another common factor amongst our students is that almost 50% of them are on free or reduced lunch. As such, since this makes us a title one school, we have limited resources. In spite of this, most of our students are resilient and make the most of the limited equipment that we have as compared to much larger schools.
In spite of the many challenges each student faces at school and at home, there is one factor that seems to remain consistent: students who enroll in our weights and conditioning class are excited about seeing how far they can push themselves mentally and physically.
My Project
Our weight room is essential for a large number of our students- whether they be from Weights and Conditioning, Individual Lifetime Activities, Fit for Life, Dance Conditioning, or our many different sports teams. We also additional students who would like to come in after school to lift.
For many of them that face challenges at home and at school, weightlifting and exercise is a healthy outlet.
The weight room is also a safe place for many of them. This is because it is the only place where they find success and do not feel like a failure. Another reason why the weight room is so important to our students is that its the only place where they can lift for free. Because of the economic struggles many of our students face, they cannot afford gym memberships.
I'm really hoping someone reading this can help us out! We have many different classes and student who depend on our limited equipment. We are grateful for the equipment we already have which were donated by members of the community, but I'm not sure how much longer the equipment will hold up.
Here is a list of what we are currently working with: one squat rack, one bench press rack, ten medicine balls, and about twelve mismatched dumbbells. We are looking for a powerlifting rack, Olympic plate set, barbells, and a bench so we can begin strength training. We will gladly accept any used equipment as well!
Thank you for taking the time to read about our project. Getting more equipment will be such a tremendous blessing to our students!
