Isn't it Great that We're All Different?- Practicing Tolerance
My students need art/craft supplies like construction paper and wiggly eyes. We need books about people who are "different" from us. We need tools to help classmates with ADHD. We need PE catch toys.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kind, hard working students are mainly English Language Learners who practice reading, writing, listening and speaking skills every day. My goal is to make school engaging so they will want to come to school every day. My students crave learning with technology, computer programming, and art to help them use collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity skills! We learn social skills through interactions with peers. Our classroom is set up in "flexible seating" so we can move more and sit where we can best concentrate and feel comfortable.
My nurturing students are "buddies" to the special day class in our grade, so we learn from each other.
We learn cooperation, patience, and teamwork, as well as grade level common core standards as they work with the buddies. Some of my students give up their own recess playtime to play with our buddies, and help them be included in playground activities. A few of them plan to be special needs educators someday!
Our school's distinguished practice is technology, and I am always looking for ways to integrate technology into all subject areas (STEAM- Science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
My Project
The best way to learn tolerance is to practice tolerance every day! Our class has a sign: "Being fair to everyone doesn't mean we all get the same thing-- we get what we need!" To start the year, I will create a classroom puzzle, where each student creates their own picture on a piece. The puzzle will be a way for us to see that "we are each a unique part of the whole group and we all fit in." Being "buddies" to our special education peers teaches tolerance for others. Even in our own class, peers have special needs. Some of my students with ADD/ADHD will learn better when they can move and "fidget" more. The special stool and fidget pencil toppers will give them a quiet way to move, but allows them to concentrate at the same time.
The books help teach tolerance (especially the ones with topics about special needs students), and give us great conversation starters to prepare us for some of the unique behaviors we will see from our buddies.
We will also read about some famous people who made a difference and taught tolerance, like Gandhi. These additional books about "famous" people add to a collection I have already started.
Science/social studies art projects with our buddies will help them develop fine motor skills, and teach us that kids are kids, and we ALL have talents and abilities! With buddies, will be making "Rainbow Fish,"after reading the story about being different and accepting others. At Thanksgiving, we make a "thankful for" turkey. We will help our buddies build a solar system model with the foam clay for Open House. Playing outside with our buddies, using the catch toy (gross motor skills) shows other peers at school that we accept and love ALL friends!
