Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of high needs fifth graders works hard all day long: Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, Math, Reading Test Practice, and Math Test Practice.
Unfortunately, the arts never figure into our daily equation. Our school has an art teacher 2 days a week. However, she works only with kindergarten, first, and second grades. Why? Because these are not testing grades. The end result: no time whatsoever for any sort of art instruction, much less an art activity for older students.
My students crave artistic expression. Any spare moments are spent sketching in their margins and tracing pictures from books. These students deserve a full education, not just lessons in test taking.
I would like to create a working Art Center in my classroom. Each week, we will explore a different aspect of visual art through small group instruction, whole class discussion, and individual and partner activities. Students will learn about important figures in art history, become familiar with basic artistic movements, and, of course, express themselves creatively through a variety of artistic media.
The Art Center will educate 23 of Brooklyn's poorest students this year, and continue to inspire future artists for years to come. This center will include: texts on important figures/movements in art history; activities that link art with Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies; and basic supplies such as washable paints, brushes, paper, pens, pastels, and pencils.
Please help me give underprivileged kids a well-rounded education. Thank you so much for your consideration!
