Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We live on a small island that is only accessible by boat or plane. Our school has approximately 180 students in grades PreK-12. The school and community are approximately 30% Hispanic and 68% Caucasian. The families are tight-knit and many parents are volunteer coaches at the school and in the community youth leagues.
Ultimately, it's a community where kids still play outside until dinner time.
We try to provide safe, welcoming spaces for our youth, and it is the most generous community one could ever hope to be a part of, but we're also limited. The economy and the families' incomes are supported by a 5-6 month tourist season. Often times storms can cut that even shorter.
The school emphasizes recess, outdoor play, and exploration as much as possible. With some of the best test scores in the state, we believe it creates healthier and happier students who are eager to learn.
My Project
Our school promotes physical activity and play. Every student receives at least 30 minutes of Physical Education per day. Our lunch period is 45 minutes and 25 of those minutes are supervised outside time. Also, many teachers allow recess time.
Every student here would benefit from recess equipment.
If we had a central storage unit that contained general recess items, each class would get to use the equipment during their outside time. Teachers would not have to transport their own equipment or go borrow from the gym.
Specifically, we need a storage box to protect the items in the evenings and on the weekends as our playground is open to the community after school hours. Also, we'd like it stocked with a variety of equipment: balls, bats, bases, jump ropes, etc.
