This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a diverse public charter school which receives Title I funding, with 87% of our students coming from low-income households and eligible for free and reduced-price lunches (FRL).
As we strive towards strong academic achievement, our school is collaborating with the National Institute for STEM Education to strengthen instruction for students in Grades K-8.
I am excited about moving with my students from 3rd to 4th grade this fall! They are a diverse community of learners with amazing energy and they are a lot of fun to be around. To ensure my students learn throughout the academic year and perform well during testing season, my classroom is focused on the latest learning strategies. My primary focus has been on literacy and will expand to STEM content areas this year.
My Project
My students are very inquisitive and would benefit from practical opportunities to engage in independent scientific inquiry and math facts practice. This request includes science activities like "Snap Circuits", SuperScience STEM Instant projects, STEM Challenges Learning Cards and microscopic sample slides. All of these products allow students to choose a project that they will research, design, and implement using common materials and assignments will be completed in class and for homework. In addition, I want to provide students who struggle with basic math skills a fun opportunity to boost math performance with the Clumsy Thief Math Game.
I am inspired by community efforts to stimulate children's interest in STEM careers.
I also want to support my students in expanding their knowledge in applying scientific and math concepts while encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Other requested supplies such as dry erase lap boards can be used to document scientific findings and Samsung Galaxy tablets will be used for internet research as well as practicing online science activities.
Every time I watch Ad Council commercials focusing on "Empowering Girls in STEM", I am more determined to provide encouragement for the girls and boys who enter my classroom each day. This funding request will help my students as they approach tasks that require critical thinking and analytical skills.
