My students are eager English Language Learners who, though they are often shy about listening and speaking tasks, take pride in seeing their own progress and crave those moments when they see concrete evidence of their growing abilities.
I love challenging my students to create multimedia digital products that showcase their creativity, personal stories, growing academic conceptual understanding and blossoming English language skills.
At first they are very nervous, but the results excite them and leave them wanting to show more of their learning.
My Project
The English Learners in my class create a variety of digital projects and assessments during which they need to record their voices clearly and with good quality. They produce presentations about their academic work on Google Slides and then narrate them using Screencastify. They also record their voices during tests to show their ability to decode academic words and create clear spoken language related to concepts studied in class. In addition, this year we have been recording short videos on Flipgrid in which students describe their thinking and problem solving processes in a variety of academic tasks.
In the future I would love to develop even more assignments in which students explain how they solve math problems or completed scientific procedures or experiments.
The headsets we currently have are not compatible with the new computers at our school, and I only have a handful of borrowed desktop microphones in class. The built-in microphones on the laptops work fine in a quiet environment, but with the natural background noise in a classroom it really helps to have mics that the students can use at closer range, especially for more polished video projects. These headsets would be a valuable addition to our equipment!
