This year will be my fifth year at P.S. 20. I took up a new challenge: I am teaching a second grade inclusion class. Most of the children in my class are learning disabled. They are put into an inclusion class with non-learning disabled students of their grade level where two teachers are assigned. Even though my children are special, they are expected to perform and follow the same curriculum as all other second grade classes. My students need visual teaching materials to understand and learn better. My school does not have social studies materials. Many of the social studies areas that are covered in second grade are too abstract for my students. They need to see pictures, and explore hands-on to understand the subject better. I found a great program at Lakeshore Learning that will allow me to be creative and present the topics visually. I do not want my students to leave the second grade thinking that the Bronx is their entire world. These materials will also help prepare my students for future social studies testing. I will greatly appreciate your help in making this possible.
