I have a class of 16 fabulous third-graders. They come to school each day with smiles and ready to work. Third grade is a year full of challenges and these boys and girls are ready and willing to show all they're capable of.
Students have different needs when learning.
Many of my students prefer to stand. This means they are hunched over their desks. Others have feet that seem to be always "on the go." Although we use movement breaks in our classroom during transitions this just isn't enough for some children.
A desk which allows these students to have the option to stand comfortably while working has proven beneficial to student learning. The natural movement of standing at a desk increases academic achievement because the child is able to remain focused on the task at hand. The swinging footrest also allows children to burn extra energy and improves posture.
My Project
Our classroom is an inviting and engaging environment where students can work around the room. We have large cushions on the floor, bungee chairs and community tables. We even have a class pet, a Saint Bernard that the students enjoy reading to. However, there are times when students are expected to complete tasks independently at their desk. Often this is for assessments which causes anxiety in some students. The ability to stand and move (via the swinging footrest) allows for these students to control their anxiety and focus on the task at hand, increasing achievement and self-confidence.
Recent studies recommend we all should be standing more at work. Today children are less active than years ago, spending more time sitting down with technology. The standing desk will add more physical activity into the day and the stool will provide the option of sitting.
Benjamin Franklin said, "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." The addition of stand up desks to our classroom will further increase working options for my students, thus having a bigger pay off in the end.
