Ms. Altman from Chapel Hill NC is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need your support in attending Breathe for Change's mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and yoga workshops so I am better prepared to help my students during this global health crisis.

My students, in kindergarten to 5th grade, are amazing, eager children who are determined to succeed, but need extra support when it comes to math and science. Students at our school are both socioeconomically and culturally/ethnically diverse.
My students love to learn, inquire, collaborate, and participate in activities that challenge and require them to dig deeper in a loving, supportive, and creative classroom environment as they acquire new math strategies.
Since this pandemic began I have heard and read such terms as "toxic positivity," "you have to Maslow before you Bloom," "box breathing," and more when it comes to meeting the needs of students, educators, and their families during this pandemic. But is being positive really toxic? What if some people truly focus on positivity while others need something more than just kind words?
We are in the midst of a global pandemic and I want to ensure that I am able to support my school community with the joy and enthusiasm they are accustomed to without it being perceived as "toxic positivity".
Teachers need professional development training on social-emotional learning now more than ever. According to the Breathe for Change website, the Yoga, Social-Emotional Learning, and Mindfulness courses are "designed to inspire and equip you to prioritize your own well-being, and teach foundational mindfulness, mindful movement, and social-emotional practices to enhance the health and well-being of young people. Through this training, you will develop a personal well-being practice, and gain tools to integrate mindfulness, and social-emotional learning into your life and teaching." I'm hoping these online modules will help better prepare me in meeting my students' needs by equipping them with mindfulness tools and strategies that can be utilized during this pandemic and beyond.
