The California Content Standards for third grade include learning about the solar system. Fortunately, there has been a lot in the news recently about the planets. I would love to harness all that energy the news is generating to inspire my third grade students, while teaching them science. It is difficult for children so young to imagine something so removed from their experience as our solar system. I would like to get a model of the planets as they circle the sun to help my students visualize our solar system. As part of a solar system unit, my students will learn about the planets through reading and make their own model of a planet. I plan on hosting a student debate as to whether Pluto should be allowed to be called a planet. My students will also write to the International Astronomical Union to assert their opinion on the matter. I am teaching third grade for the first time this year, in a district with very little money, in a diverse school with a high number of families that qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of our parents cannot afford to send the students on field trips to museums for hands on experiences. While the district struggles to raise reading and math scores among our challenging population, science has been dropped by the wayside. Please consider helping our class have this in-class tactile, multi-faceted learning experience. I love science and I believe my students will too, if they are given the opportunity and means to experience it in an exciting context. Thank you for considering this proposal. Sincerely, Ms. Wilbanks Third Grade Teacher
