My students need AquaVial E.Coli and Coliform Water Test Kit kits and Drinking Water Test Strips, in order to properly apply real world situations to the classroom setting.
Our students come from all walks of life in Atascadero. There are many different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds at play that it lends itself to a very diverse group of kids. 40% of our student body is on free or reduced lunches and just under 10% are English learners. Some of our students come from broken homes and or are living under a different roof every night. With all of these different backgrounds the one thing that they all have in common is an excitement for learning science.
When these students come into our classrooms they want to be engaged and pushed in ways that help them think outside the box.
They are not afraid to try new experiments or be challenged to come up with their own solutions to problems that we put before them. Many of our students have not been pushed to achieve like they are in 8th grade and they are finding that they can perform at high levels.
We as a staff want to continue to set the bar high and create new and exciting ways for our students to grow in their love for science. Our students deserve nothing less then the best experience.
My Project
My students need AquaVial E.Coli and Coliform Water Test Kit kits and Drinking Water Test Strips, in order to properly apply real world situations to the classroom setting. The materials requested for this project will allow our students to properly test the quality of water after it has filtered through their bioswales. A bioswale is a filtration system composed of natural materials such as gravel, soil, sand, and plant life. They are designed to surround parking lots and city streets to help reduce the level of pollutants in our ground water.
Our students will be creating their own miniature bioswales and the use of these testing kits will allow them to experience firsthand how water quality is actually assessed.
When this project is completed they will have real world applicable experience and a stronger appreciation of water conservation. They will also feel like scientists!
