Is It Fiction or Nonfiction, That is the Question?
My students need an all inclusive year subscription to Bookflix, a digital literacy resource that strengthens early literacy skills, while exposing young learners to real world concepts.
My school is an urban, year-round elementary school with diverse students and staff. As children are, all students are energetic and curious, who love to learn. This grant is primarily for PreK to third grade students. Many of these students are bilingual and others are learning English for the first time. Our population includes students from several different countries around the world to "traditional" homes, to students who are homeless, but above all, the students work together in harmony. We take pride in how our classroom communities welcome newcomers, while maintaining healthy relationships with each other.
Our students, in Pre-Kindergarten to third grade, are very curious about their ever changing world and how each can benefit, as they learn to be 21st Century learners.
They are at a perfect age to learn about the world around them, while integrating that knowledge into all academic areas. As a 21st Century learner, the students learn through real-life or authentic experiences and opportunities, which Bookflix can offer.
It is our hope that all children are able to continuously learn, in many different ways, but always remembering their goal, to be successful individuals post high school graduation and beyond.
My Project
Bookflix is an excellent resource for children and for that matter, teachers and parents alike. It is a way for all students to either read or listen to reading, numerous fiction and nonfiction stories based on the same topic. It is a great way for English as a Second Language students and students that have experienced a gap in their literacy learning, to strengthen their early learning literacy skills and their love for knowledge.
Bookflix is a way for students to watch, read, listen and explore an array of topics, by using fiction and nonfiction stories and videos.
It is an all inclusive site, easy for a preschooler to learn, as well as a non-English speaking third grader. It is a way for all children to learn about the exciting, but resilient world that we live in, in a way that is fun, yet, very academic in nature. It teaches the difference between fiction and nonfiction. It teaches the user information about topics such as animals, plants, people and much more. In addition, the site gives the student opportunities to make choices and to manipulate the site in a way that confidently benefits all learners. It allows the student to watch a story, read a story, do puzzles, learn about the authors and explore the web in a safe way. Go to http://www.scholastic.com/digital/bookflix.htm and learn about the features of the site and more.
Bookflix allows the student to become engaged in learning in a way that is interactive and fun. Research tells us that it is important for students to read the same number of fiction vs nonfiction texts. Bookflix addresses this in a beautiful way!
