iReading: Early Literacy Through Transferable Technology Skills
My students need 10 iPads to help continue our journey to becoming 21st century learners. We are asking for 10 refurbished iPads to add to our existing technology so that students can develop digital literacy skills.

My Students
In my class we have a very specific definition of brave. To us, brave is when you're afraid of something, but you do it anyway.
The bravery of my first graders inspires me each and every day.
After all, it's scary to take a risk and try a tough answer. It's scary to admit when you're not quite sure how to read a word or solve a problem. Somehow, though, my 6 year olds come to school every day to do just that. My students are special because they are always ready to learn despite hailing from low income and often crime-ridden neighborhoods. I feel thankful to be part of a community and school that is working to create more opportunities for my children to succeed despite their socio-economic status, and I know that their time with me as readers, writers, scientists, and dreamers is preparing them for a happy and productive life in the future.
My Project
My students are part of a generation known as "digital natives." They don't know a world without smart phones, laptops, and tablets. Even more incredibly, my students live within a mile of some of the world's most important tech companies! Google, Facebook, and Amazon are only a short distance from our campus. Recognizing that we live in an increasingly digital world, it only makes sense that my students should have the same access to technology in their classrooms that any other child would.
Increased technology in the classroom provides pathways for students to learn in ways that are interesting to them, and transferable for their future.
When students start their earliest reading experiences with access to quality educational apps as well as online research about topics that interest them, school becomes a haven of curiosity and growth. By showing my students that the tech all around them can be used for learning as well as play, the lines between home and school become blurred, and they can push their curiosity and passions even further to become the deep thinkers and innovators that our East Palo Alto community needs.
The iPads I'm requesting will allow my students to not only become strong readers, but will also provide them with an engine to fuel their curiosity.
