"People who make music together cannot be enemies, at least while the music lasts."-Paul Hindemith
This quote perfectly describes the environment in the Eden Bulldog Music Program.
It is a safe environment where we work together as a team to accomplish a common goal: making music together.
We are a small rural school with around two hundred students.
Most of these students will attend all twelve years of school together. In our school, being in band is something many of my kids look forward to from a young age. Band is every day for the 5th and 6th graders as well as the high school band, and they are so excited when they come in to class. The younger grades meet for music class two to three times a week. The band hall is a safe environment for them to express themselves that many of them look forward to during their school day.
We are a high poverty district and the band program spent many years being overlooked, but you wouldn't know it from the pride that my students show. They take immaculate care of their instruments and equipment and represent their school with pride in everything they do.
Currently we only have one computer in the band hall, and it's processing speeds are minimal at best. We are also receiving a new iPad this fall thanks to Donors Choose. The majority of the time, the students will just go to the computer lab because of the wait time. We would use an iPad for many things. Elementary uses it to use interactive games and study for music memory tests. Junior High and High School will use it often in order to pass of their music on a program called smart music. The school has provided me with an iPad however it is not a late enough edition to run this program. This will save valuable class time wasted for playing tests as well as help us to continue to use technology in our classroom.
This project would greatly improve our classroom.
By having iPads we will be able to test quicker, eliminate stage fright as much as possible by testing in a private area, as well as motivate those visual learners to practice after school with an iPad which is very similar to a video game for many of my students.
