iPod! You Pod! We All Need An iPod!

My students need two iPods and 16 accompanying books to have a variety of stories read to them throughout the day.

My Students

Do you remember begging to read your favorite book "just one more time"? With these books and iPods my students can have their favorites read to them anytime they want. They can cozy up with some of their favorite stories and listen to the authors' words come to life again and again.

My students come from such a rich variety of backgrounds and are such lovers of learning.

They adore reading lessons and bring with them to school everyday an enthusiasm for learning that is unmatched. They can't get enough of their favorite stories and would be completely thrilled to sit and spend a day handing me read aloud books to share with them. With this technology and these books my students can read texts that are on their levels to increase their fluency and expression. My emerging readers will also benefit immensely with this tool because it will eliminate the frustration of decoding so that they can concentrate on the story and build their comprehension. Everybody can be a winner when they're listening to and absorbing their favorite stories.

My Project

As I mentioned, there is an incredible amount of diversity within our classroom. In fact, our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country! With that in mind, not all of my students can have their favorite stories read to them at home. Because so many of my students are the first generation to read and speak English they're not able to bring home their books for their families to read to them. School is often the only place that they read and speak English in a day. I'd like to make it as rich and enjoyable a time as I possibly can. These iPods and classic story books can be paired to provide several students the ability to sit and hear a story during the day, even when I'm not available to read it to them. Additionally, these versatile iPods will enable me to record other supplemental materials such as sight words and comprehension questions for students to study and respond to during class. The possibilities really are endless!

I hope that you will consider sharing literacy and technology with these scholars.

As young as they are, these boys and girls are incredibly tech savvy. I know they would leap at the chance to have at their fingertips the ability to choose and then listen to their own read aloud books.
