Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school library is a vibrant place, with throngs of students eager to check books out and participate in lunchtime book clubs. Some students are below grade level and need help accessing texts which are above their independent level.
Our urban, K-8 public school currently serves 278 students.
The student population is extremely diverse economically and ethnically, with 77% of students receiving free and reduced lunch and nearly 40% being English language learners. We are very lucky to have a thriving school library, and every student in the school visits the library each week.
My Project
While most of my students love to read, some of them are below grade level and cannot participate in lunchtime library book clubs because the books are too challenging. In the past I have had to tell them they cannot participate, which is a painful thing to tell a child who is eager to join in! I am requesting the funds for fourteen iPod shuffles, on which I will put the book we are reading for book clubs. When students can hear the book being read as they read the text, they can absorb the content and participate fully in the lunchtime book clubs.
Enabling students to access the content of the books we read in our lunchtime library book clubs will transform the experience for students reading below grade level.
Not only will they enjoy the book and be able to participate socially with their peers who are reading at a higher level, but they will feel proud and happy that the books are not "too hard" for them. It is a win-win situation all around!
