My Students

Research shows that reading to children is one of the best practices we have for enhancing student learning. In today's society, many kiddos are not being read to at home. Please help our kindergarten kiddos learn to read by supporting our listening center.

We are a small rural school.

I am the only kindergarten teacher in our building. Many families in our area have been affected by the economy. We are noticing that many of the students moving into the area have been forced to move in with extended family as they are losing their jobs/homes.

My Project

Many of these students are not afforded the opportunity to interact with today's technology. By using iPods as a listening center, I can offer the experience of technology while I enhance their literacy skills. The students will be able to choose a spot in the room and sit down with a book and their iPod to hear the story. In kindergarten, listening to stories and following along with the text is an important part in the development of their literacy skills. I have also developed several podcasts that practice and enhance my phonics instruction. Students will be able to use the iPods to reinforce this phonics instruction.

Having these iPods for our listening center will help to develop independence as well as technology and literacy skills.

Students for many years to come will be able to benefit from this technology. I thank you for considering this project!
