I teach Kindergarten at a first year school in Katy, Texas. For most of my students, this is their first exposure to a formalized school system. Every day, our goal is to push ourselves to learn something new and to have fun while doing it. We also love to collaborate and share our learning.
We had quite an unconventional start to our year when Hurricane Harvey hit our region.
Many of my students were displaced for several months or had family members that were affected.
After only eight full days in the classroom, we missed two weeks of school right at the beginning of the year, but my class came back ready and eager to learn. I am so proud of their strength, courage, and perseverance. Though this year had a rocky start, Hurricane Harvey has only brought our class closer.
My Project
Using iPads in the classroom is an effective and engaging tool to utilize in this generation of innovation. My students will use these iPads to reinforce the learning of all subjects. I will teach them to use educational apps, learning portfolios, and research tools to elevate learning and get the most out of the technology that is at our fingertips.
My goal for this project is to create the most authentic learning experience possible for my students.
Each of my students learn in unique and different ways, and it is my job to foster the ways in which they learn best.
One of my favorite ways to communicate between school and home is an app called Seesaw. This has been a great tool to get parents involved in their child's learning and education. This year has been especially difficult with Harvey displacing families and disrupting our year. Using iPads to bridge the school to home communication to get parents involved has been wonderful for my students. Adding 5 iPads to my classroom will allow for many more learning experiences for my students. It will also allow more opportunities to work in smaller groups without having to sacrifice using technology.
