Many of my students do not have access to technology at home. The Common Core standards require students to be proficient readers& know math facts to be successful. There are several students who need an interactive way to be motivated and iPads are a way to capture attention and motivate students.
My school has an extremely diverse population.
Over 1/3 of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Many students are second language learners and iPads would provide extra support to enable these students to become proficient in English. These students need to have access to technology resources that they do not have access to at home. These students will be motivated and have more individual skill practice in reading and mathematical skills. Some parents are not able to provide support, as they do not have the language, time, or academic resources to provide them assistance. My school does not qualify for Title I supplemental resources; therefore technology is limited to 1 classroom computer for 31 students and approximately 30 minutes of computer lab one time per week. My students would be extremely excited to learn and work with an iPad during the academic day.
My Project
I currently have a Hooked on Phonics classroom license, which would allow me to put struggling readers on this interactive and exceptional program to assist their language acquisition while helping them learn to read. Additionally, I have found many Common Core based reading and math apps that I would install on the iPad. There are many free teacher apps that allow students to read various books at their reading level on the iPad. I would have a group of 3 students working on the iPads continuously during the day to provide individual attention and immediate feedback that these students need. Providing students with iPads in class is a way to provide them with technology that they could not have access to outside of school and to provide them with individual intervention, enrichment, feedback, and continual practice during the school day in a fun and motivating way.
This of three iPad minis with warranties, headphones, and cases will enable several second language learners who need substantial assistance to receive ongoing and personal instruction while I am able to teach my other students.
Students who are at or above grade level will be able to practice and extend their skills with a variety of enrichment programs. I will be able to focus on all students needs by using technology for intervention, practice, and enrichment activities for a group of 3 students throughout the school day.
