My students need access to iPads & protective cases during their speech sessions!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students attend a Title I school in Far Rockaway, Queens. They are amazing Pre-K through 8th grade students. As one of the speech pathologists in The School By The Sea, my students have a wide range of speech and language goals. These incredible students come from diverse backgrounds with varied educational experiences. They come to every speech therapy session with a smile on their face and are eager to achieve their goals.
Technology is a big part of the learning process but is not something that we have access to in my speech therapy room.
The students would be excited to explore the experiences offered by apps of programs we use every session on iPads. It would greatly increase their participation!
I provide therapy services to students with speech and language impairments, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. IPads will allow every student to reinforce what they are learning during lessons in a way that matches their learning style. Many of the programs or materials used in speech sessions have released apps made to compliment them. For example, my students use the Lively Letter program to learn letter sounds, how to segment, blend and manipulate phonemes. The program has an app that has turned these skills into games which students can play on the iPads. IPads would be a valuable tool that can be used for small group lessons, individual sessions, interactive activities, and literacy work as well as many other uses. Today there are apps available for articulation, reading, phonetics, social skills, executive function and more. The opportunity to watch videos related to the lesson will really help reinforce information for my students. Students will also use the iPads to reinforce concepts and vocabulary from their classroom in the subjects of math, science and humanities.
IPads will allow students to lead lessons with their group-mates, become motivated to learn and increase their willingness to participate.
I truly believe iPads will help my students become confident in their learning. They will also help them stay up to date on the latest technology and allow them access to experiences they may not have otherwise.
