My school is a K-5 Arts integrated elementary school nestled in Portland. While providing students with the academic knowledge that’s required for their grade level, our classroom teachers, arts specialists, librarian, support staff, and volunteers all work to nurture the whole child in intellectual, emotional, social, and physical ways. Our teachers are using a variety of teaching strategies. Notably, staff use a multiple-intelligence approach (developed by Howard Gardner), working with students’ verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical-rhythmic, bodily-kinetic, visual-spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist and existentialist intelligences.
This Arts Focused Elementary school is committed to the whole child and the library is no exception.
In addition, students embark on in-depth explorations of groundbreaking artists and art movements throughout history including Picasso, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Asian art, and many others deepening their understanding of world events, cultural movements, and historical perspective. Students’ strengths and learning preferences are taken into account and children are often given the opportunity to explore subjects on their own through independent projects.
Teachers use activity-oriented projects, learning centers, design technology, themes, and simulations to make learning memorable and rewarding.
My Project
In our library, students learn how to be independent seekers of information. They use the library catalog to look up books, then locate them on the shelves.
In a class of 25 students, two laptops are not enough devices so every student has equal access to look up books.
Because of this, some students leave without materials because the line to use the laptops was too long.
Given our limited shelf space, I propose setting up iPads in secure lockable mounting frames on the sides of the bookcases for ease of access. Having the iPads spread out through the library will also give the students room to maneuver when finding their books. Additionally, it will open up shelf space for additional face outs, which lead to more featured book titles.
