Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a NYC Global Studies teacher that every year teaches incoming 9th graders in a Title I school. As 9th graders, they are beyond eager to enter high school for the first time. I do everything in my power to get all levels and abilities of my students engaged and interested in global history from the beginning of time to approximately 1750. At times that means dressing in character or talking with an accent, as well as using my microphone! I work diligently to show my cherubs the world outside of New York City.
My Project
In my NYC Title I classroom, even before the crippling COVID-19 pandemic we were in need of technology. My students come from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, speak different languages, creating a truly unique and diverse classroom. Many of them lack access to technology in their homes which motivates me to provide these tools for my students even more. They are funny, dedicated, brilliant, kind, inquiring minds who rise to any academic challenge presented to them. I need stimulating and enthralling academic exposures in order to help solidify the Global History content they are learning. My high school does the best it can for our highly impoverished population.
Even with this ambitious project, I will not have a 1:1 classroom, but the addition of 20 iPads into my classroom will leave it as one of the only classrooms in the school that has daily access to such technology.
My students in both Gen Ed and ICT classes will be able to access apps that reinforce skills and enable higher level learning. An iPad helps students who are kinesthetic and visual learners open up the doors of education and individualize their learning experiences. The iPad will be a tool that helps create more authentic learning experiences in the classroom as well as build twenty-first-century skills that my children need in order to be successful in a quickly evolving technical world. My students will be able to work in groups or independently with the iPads.
Without consistent access to technology, my students are not able to access 21st-century skills. I believe that this is not fair nor equitable due to a lack of funds, which have been cut across NYC. My students deserve to explore and learn on the same level as students who do have this access.
