When you walk into my classroom, you will see children reading, writing, and using hands on activities to help them in both as well as math. They will tell you they are learning like champions! They do that by being respectful, responsible and doing their very best.
My students come from families living in extreme poverty.
They did not grow up being read to and were not involved in day to day conversations like many privileged children are. They come into my classroom not knowing any letters, sounds, words or even the ability to recite the alphabet. I work at an amazing school with dedicated staff that's sole purpose is to serve our students to reach their highest potential. We want EVERY child reading and writing so they can succeed in all areas. Math is also a big focus as it is needed in daily skills as an adult.
My Project
Currently, my students and I are lucky enough to have four computers in our classroom. However, I have 20 students split up into groups of 5 during our reading stations. I meet with each group every day and while I am doing so, each group of students have the opportunity to use the computers. At this time two students must share one computer because our listening center recently broke. My students are great about sharing, however they are not getting the full benefits of using the technology if they are having to take turns in their short time each day. I would teach my students how to use apps on the ipad that help them recognize and trace letters, sounds and numbers, read and build sentences and words, add and subtract, as well as many other reading and math strategies.
The donations to our classroom project will instill excitement for learning in my students.
One of their favorite things about school is that they get to use the computers, because many do not have one at home. Imagine the look on their faces when they learn they get to use an ipad as well!
