My students need iPads to engage them in meaningful activities at their own level.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
I believe that all students have 'special needs' in that every student learns in their own way, at their own pace, and have varying degrees of interest in different areas. I teach children with immensely diverse needs every year. This includes many students on the spectrum or with learning disabilities, are English Language Learners or have ADHD who would greatly benefit from the use of hands-on technology like iPads. And, because children will be using these iPads, they are going to need loads of protection from my overactive and excitable students so I have asked for protective cases.
Children learn so much more when they actually manipulate what they are learning with their own hands!
With iPads, my students will be able to not only learn valuable technology skills necessary to today's world, but they will also have fun learning through various educational apps and games.
Using iPads, which students could work on independently or with a partner, would be immensely beneficial in creating meaningful and engaging activities surrounding word work, reading fluency, math concepts, coding, science, engineering, history, art, and more.
