My students need iPads to be able to access evidence based interventions to enhance their abilities to effectively communicate.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I provide speech-language services in a Title 1 school for 45 students in general education and self-contained classes (Early Learning Support: Preschool & Grades K-2, Independence & Learning Support). My caseload consist of elementary school students diagnosed with academically-based communication deficits/delays in the areas of articulation, language, and/or fluency. Each of my students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to address specific goals to improve communication skills.
My students hold a special place in my heart, because they look forward to attending speech-language therapy to work on their goals to become better communicators.
Being a speech-language pathologist allows me to focus on teaching and preparing students for the future, which provides them opportunities to achieve maximum growth and academic success.
As a school based speech-language pathologist, I work with students in preschool - 5th grade with various disabilities (e.g. Developmental Delays, Intellectual Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech Language Impairment, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Other Health Impairment). In speech-language therapy, I address articulation, receptive-expressive language, and fluency skills. Each student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that includes specific speech-language goals to address communication skills.
Currently, I use my personal iPad to work with the students, which makes it difficult when the group size includes 3-5 students.
The iPads will be used to facilitate the students' growth in the areas of vocabulary, listening comprehension, answering "wh" questions, following directions, sequencing, categorization, and verbal output (e.g. Alternative Augmentative Communication device). Also, the iPads will be used to increase different ways of learning with games, activities, and interactive stories that focus on speech and language growth to meet the various needs of each student on my caseload.
