This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a college prep high school, we hold all of our students to high behavioral and academic expectations. This standard of excellence is one that both teachers and students value each and every day despite the low expectations of many surrounding schools in the neighborhood.
My students are those with special needs ranging from learning disabilities to social/emotional needs, and who benefit from non-traditional instruction.
Many enter high school well below grade level in reading and math. The multi-modality and interactive experience that the iPad provides will help them succeed in their academic classes. The iPad provides apps for students with special needs such as math manipulatives, oral reading, and interactive science experiments.
My Project
As an example of my students' deficiencies, several of them enter high school as non-readers. Reading apps on the iPad allow struggling readers to both hear and see the decoding process in order to build fluency and vocabulary. Learning to become better readers is arguably the most important skill I could give my students in order to prepare them for college success.
Teaching our students the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in college will allow them to have choice when applying to and choosing a school.
Please help my students achieve their highest potential by helping me to best meet their learning needs.
