I am a learning behavior specialist who serves students with Autism, Down Syndrome, cognitive disabilities, emotional disabilities, attention deficits, and other health impairments.
I believe this quote by Dr. Kevin Maxwell, "Our job is to teach the students we have.
Not the ones we would like to have. Not the ones we used to have. Those we have right now. All of them." Every year, I meet my students where they are in terms of their individualized education plan and work hard to help them meet their goals for the school year. For some of them, it may mean learning the letters of the alphabet and the letter sounds. For others, it may mean learning sight words and yet others may learn to read! Each of my students brings their own set of unique challenges and strengths.
My Project
Since my classroom is so educationally diverse, I am requesting two iPad minis that can be used to supplement lessons in order to build students' basic skills, specific to their individualized education plan goals. Apple has a special education app collection that I will utilize to customize instruction for my students. For example, for students who are working on letter and letter sound recognition, the iPads will be used to provide them with access to educational technology in order to assist them with further developing these skills. Students will also utilize the iPads for other skills such as sight word reading, number recognition, counting skills, basic addition, and basic subtraction (as dictated by their IEP goals).
It is imperative that I utilize every possible resource in helping my students reach their full potential.
I am responsible for helping them build the solid foundation of basic skills that they will be utilizing the rest of their lives. It is my desire to give them the best possible start that I can give them. Thank you for making an impact on my students' lives!
