My students need 2 iPad mini's in order to increase access to online education apps that we use in our special education classroom to increase their learning time without paper and pencil!
At our school we value active learning and learning through our experiences. Students in our school are provided with physical activity an average of 100+ minutes a day in addition to movement breaks worked into the daily lesson plans. Along with the physical activity students spend a good deal of time actively engaged in hands-on activities in language arts, math, science, social studies, art and music.
Our school is just starting its second year as a new school.
Our student population is continuing to grow at a rapid rate and expect this to continue. In the special education department we have students coming in from all areas with a wide range of needs. With the diversity of our students in our classrooms there has been some struggles but along the way we have seen a lot of growth in a short amount of time.
I am one of the several special education teachers and I provide services both in the general education classroom as well as in my special education classroom, depending on the student's needs. When students are in my room they come to work on academics, manage their behaviors, or take a calming break from their classroom.
My Project
In my classroom I use a variety of methods to engage my students in learning and this includes incorporating technology. I teach special education classes for reading, writing, mathematics, and social skills to students in grades 1-4. Technology is a great way for students with special needs to engage in learning concepts that they would not normally grasp when given instruction in a large group setting. Plus, the iPads allow for repeated practice with the concepts that have been taught, allowing students with special needs the time and practice they need for understanding new material.
We are limited in the amount of technology we have available to our students.
I have been using my own personal iPad with my students but would love to be able to offer more devices to expand the learning of my students. With more devices in the classroom I would be able to differentiate what the students are learning and work with them more at their own learning levels.
