Our school is an K-5 arts magnet school that has fully embraced the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) teaching practices. We are a successful school and are historically placed in the top levels of our state ranking system for schools. Our student population is a wonderful mix of children from across the spectrum in terms of race, ethnicity and income. We feel our success is, in part, due to our blended curriculum that combines art, science and math in-class projects throughout the year and across the curriculum. Our students begin learning computer programming in Kindergarten and move to applying what they have learned to other areas of curriculum. Over the past few years, their programming skills have really progressed and they are ready to take it to the next step - connecting programming to robotics.
My Project
Students will use these iPads to learn how to code robots. Students have been learning how to code using Blockly and other visual programming languages. To give students a "real-world" experience with computer programming, we have purchased several robots but need more devices to "operate" them. To make the robots do anything at all, they will use their iPads.
Students will program the robots on their iPads using the computer programming concepts and skills they have learned.
Students will obtain a deeper understanding of abstract concepts such as loops or conditionals when applied to real-world applications such as making a robot move. We are really excited to expand and extend our computer programming unit with robotics!
