“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” – David Warlick
My classroom is vibrant, warm, and inviting.
It is a Title One Reading classroom. Our school currently has over 75% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. I teach in a high-poverty area in Appalachia Ohio. Many of my students do not have access to technology at home. I am a reading specialist at my school and I work with at-risk students. I work with around 40-50 kids each day, in a small group setting. All the students I work with are well below grade level within reading. With that being said, my classroom has a wide range of needs. However, my students are very passionate about learning! They put forth their personal best every day. Although they are all struggling readers, they know that I have high expectations for each of them. I truly believe they will be successful and can make tremendous progress with the help of the right resources and tools. My kids know that there is no limit to what they can learn and achieve.
My Project
Our school has purchased many great reading intervention programs, however, we do not have the sufficient technology to implement the programs effectively in the classrooms. Our school has recently purchased the Lexia program, which has already done great things for our students! However, they are not getting their prescribed amount of time due to lack of technology in the building. Having iPads in my room will help my at risk students meet their prescribed Lexia time each week. There are many other great apps on the iPads for the students to aid in them becoming successful readers and to help them to be successful in this technology driven generation. Students will have access to more books and stories on the iPads as well. There is no limit to what my students can achieve with some technology integration within my reading classroom!
The iPads will change my students lives because it will make them better readers and overall more tech savvy.
My students who live in high poverty will for once have access to iPads and more books and stories than they could imagine! This project will change my students lives by helping them to succeed even when the odds are piled against them because of their home lives and where they live. This project will help me get my students up to grade level and will help them to be successful readers.
