My students need 5 iPads and protective cases to for teachers and students around our school to use for activities and to reward and track positive points through ClassDojo.
My school is working very hard to ensure that all students make positive choices. We have implemented a schoolwide research-based program called PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) which guides students on the right path in making positive choices. Our school consists of grades Pre-K through Grade five. We are an extremely diverse school where students come from different backgrounds and cultures. Many of our students are brand new to the country. While this is very exciting, it is very scary for our newcomers and leads to challenges that we must overcome. Having a system in place has begun to show growth within the area of social-emotional learning. Awareness of differences, combined with explicit teaching and modeling of acceptance, leads to a more socially and emotionally healthy group of students.
In our school, it is extremely important to teach students how to be tolerant, accepting, and inclusive of the needs and well being of others.
This is developed through creating a school culture of common goals as developed through a behavior system. Doing so on ClassDojo helps us to track the positive choices that students make on this online platform.
My Project
My project is one that hopes to acquire more devices and protective cases for our school. If this goal is reached, staff members across our school will be able to grant students points using this portable form of technology. For example, during lunchtime, students will be able to be granted points from staff members who are supervising in the cafeteria. In addition, students in the gym will be able to earn points for positive choices during physical education time.
In addition to teachers using the devices to track points, students will also be able to use the iPads for instructional purposes.
Various apps and programs can be utilized for students who learn using different modalities. For example, instructional and demonstration videos can be shown, as well as created by students. Students can manipulate numbers, letters, objects, and more.
To sum up, with our online management system, ClassDojo, staff members will be able to quickly tap on a student, a group of students or a whole class at a time to award students for positive choices on an iPad. We used to have a system where tickets were handed out, but this became difficult to manage, as tickets were often lost and counting them up took a great deal of effort and precious instructional time. With these devices, staff members can quickly and easily give and track awards and it will serve as a visual reminder that positive choices are noticed and rewarded.
Some examples of positive points that students would acquire points are: helping others, showing empathy, displaying safety, following lunchroom/hallway expectations, being on task, showing respect, etc.
These are just some examples of how the acquired devices would be utilized to help students feel motivated to continue to make positive choices, as well as having use of instructional tools.
