Ms. Compton from Milwaukee WI is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 2 iPads with hard cases to entice them to build their reading skills through the use of technology.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Approximately 50% of students in special education do not graduate from high school. Students who struggle to read are much more likely to drop out. Working with students who have emotional and behavioral disabilities, I teach the neediest of high-need students.
I work with 9th-12th graders who attend an arts focused high school in Wisconsin.
To learn successfully, my students require a self-contained, small-group classroom in which they receive more highly focused teacher attention. Although all of my students struggle with emotional or behavioral issues, they are vibrant and talented individuals with high expectations for themselves and their futures. The photo, above, shows a hydroponic window garden we created, as a class. This is just one example of their talent! In addition to their academic coursework, most of my students participate in an "art major" class for 2 hours a day, studying music, dance, visual arts, or creative writing. Unfortunately, many of of my students lag far behind their peers in academic achievement- especially in reading and math. Some have learning disabilities, but many have fallen behind their peers due to attendance problems because of emotional/behavioral issues.
Technology is IMPORTANT and FUN! Providing my students with iPads dramatically increases their opportunity to engage with technology to become better students and learners. Students will use the iPads to access eBooks as well as a variety of literacy apps to build their reading and writing skills. Literacy apps will provide a fun and engaging method for students to build vocabulary, phonics, comprehension, and fluency skills. As an added bonus, students will work in pairs, practicing good group work skills and positive peer interactions.
Every student deserves to have the opportunity to graduate from high school.
Help us get the technology we need in our classroom to build literacy skills that will get us to graduation...and beyond!
