Help me give my students to create a 2:1 iPad ratio within our classroom! Students will be able to use the iPads to type, communicate and research in a more accessible way than a computer for their needs.
Our classroom is for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Students have autism, orthopedic disabilities, as well as learning and intellectual disabilities. We have many types of learners that require lots of differentiation and multiple access points to the curriculum. We have big personalities and a desire to learn, be successful, and to have fun.
Our goal in our classroom is to be able to access as much curriculum as our general education peers as possible while gaining a meaningful education that is based towards their needs.
Currently we are mainstreaming 57% of our day into general education classroom! This is a great amount of time, but our students still need the support to continue to do this.
My Project
Our school district is committed to 1:1 ratio of Chromebooks for students, however these are not easily accessible for the students in my classroom. iPads are more appropriate for my students based on their physical and learning needs. For example, calculators on an iPad can be set for delayed response times and enlarged buttons. Keyboards can provide predictable word typing to ease the writing process. Students can also access apps that are beneficial to their learning such as Epic! books, math apps, and our ULS curriculum app.
My students benefit from larger touch keyboards and calculators in order to access curriculum, the internet, and learning software.
Currently we do not meet a 1:1 iPad ratio, but with this additional iPad we will be at a 2:1 ratio. Students can participate in cooperative learning and engage in general education classes with the assistance of an iPad.
