Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 90% of our elementary students are from low-income households and the majority of our children do not attend preschool. These are definite obstacles to learning. In addition, our school sits in the center of Santa Rosa, CA, an area devastated by wildfires a few months ago. Our school was closed for three weeks during the crisis and the following clean-up process, and our students lost three weeks of vital instruction.
My position as an intervention teacher is necessary to identify and give support to any child with academic or behavioral needs.
My intervention classroom has become a place where students are allowed to work at their own pace to meet common standards.
For some children, this means a lot of time reviewing information or practicing skills multiple times.
Often, these students work one-on-one with adults or even with peers for this individualized support. But, when personnel is not available, we turn to technology for additional intervention.
My Project
Having iPad minis in my classroom will allow students who need extra support to work at their own pace reviewing information. They will be able to use specific educational apps to meet their needs in the subject areas of reading and math. In addition, students love working with technology - they can put their headphones on and focus on the tasks at hand for 15-20 minutes a day!
Donations to this project will bring current technology into my classroom in order to service intervention students.
I currently have just four handheld devices for student use in a classroom that serves over 60 students a day! The addition of two more iPad mini's will allow for more intervention students to review information at their own pace. Combined with direct instruction from teachers, assistants, and community volunteers, I know these young students will succeed and catch up from the learning opportunities they missed when our school was closed during a time of crisis!
