I teach 4th and 5th grade students in an extended resource center-based program at a semi-rural, Title I school. Even though my students come from a variety of backgrounds and locations across our city, they all come to my classroom to receive individualized, small group instruction. Academically, my students fall anywhere from being on-grade level with certain skills to up to four grade levels below.
Despite their learning challenges, they express a desire to learn and grow daily.
They are hard-working, creative students who deserve the best opportunities to learn.
My Project
The iPads will help provide opportunities for my students to work independently. Being that many of my students are unable to read without significant adult support, the iPads will allow students to have access to ebooks with read-aloud features, enabling them to read independently and develop a love for reading. I also have students that have interest in learning about topics that are not generally covered in lower level reading books. The read-aloud ebooks would give those students the opportunity to explore their interests with books outside of their reading level.
Additionally, the iPads would be used to help individualize instruction for my students.
For example, there are many great math apps and programs online that give students the opportunity to work on math skills at their level. The iPads would be a useful tool during math centers to engage students in independent learning at their level. For those students who require an individualized, alternative core reading curriculum, the iPads would also provide a way for them to easily access that material. By donating to this project, you are helping my students to not only grow academically, but to learn in ways that suit their individual needs.
