Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics in a wonderful and safe learning environment. We are located in, and serve students who live in one of the largest housing projects in the region. We have a very dynamic group of students, with 95% of our students coming from low income homes and receiving free or reduced price lunch. 38% of our diverse group have limited English proficiency, and 16% have some sort of a disability. We strive, every day, to provide a safe and caring environment that empowers them to achieve at their highest potential.
My Project
As teachers we are constantly competing with the students world at home and all of the media they have access to. We are requesting two iPads so we won't have to. iPads provide improved collaboration, increased control over their learning, alternative education, and most importantly, differentiated learning. Students will have access to all of the latest apps and technology to show them that learning can be fun and there can be educational benefits to technology.
With these iPads, students can be given freedom in their learning to learn at their own pace.
The iPads would be a supplementary educational resource and would not replace the place of the teacher, but would be used as a tool to assist students at all levels. These iPads will be used in center time after they meet with me in small groups. They will be able to access designated apps to practice their math facts and their comprehension skills. In a classroom where we have so many below level learners, they can use as much one on one access as possible. These iPads will give them continued exposure to skills they're struggling with. One app I'm excited to use with my students is called "Singapore Math." Its an app that uses signature Singapore Math methods that focus on problem solving and reasoning in a fun, interactive way. There are multiple grade levels available so students can work on skills they've missed or move on to new skills to master! I have also asked for two cases - OtterBox - Defender Series Case. Because our students are only second graders, we need to put into place some protection for the new technology to be used with longevity!
