New Dorp High School, composed of eight smaller learning communities (SLCs), is a comprehensive educational institution whose mission is to provide an environment that enables all students including high achieving, ELL, Literacy, and Instructional Support to grow holistically.
For twelve years, the Corporate Center SLC, has been catering to the English Language Learner population of the entire school.
These students, who came from different parts of the world, have different social and educational backgrounds. Teachers have been introduced to varied cultures from different North and South American countries, such as El Salvador, Mexico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rica. Other students hailed from Uzbekistan, Italy, Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Albania, Montenegro. Our African-American students originated from Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mauritania, and Sierra Leone. We also have students from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Our highly diversified student population is something that the school is very proud of. However, to be able to support them academically, there are struggles and hurdles that the students and the teachers have to overcome.
My Project
There are many Apple language apps that they could use to build their English vocabulary. Google translate is currently a useful tool that a lot of our students make use of. However, with the limited use of their cellphone as well as limited access to the Internet, they are sometimes confined to using translated dictionaries that does not cover all the academic words that they need to know. Thirdly, having iPads would allow them to easily access a lot of information (and pictures) online.
Having easy access for iPads, and being readily available in the classroom, English language learners could utilize them for a variety of academic and educational purposes.
Since students nowadays are extremely tech-savvy, I think that they would forward to using these gadgets to be able to help them develop their English language proficiency.
