My students need iPads in order to reinforce pre-reading skills and fundamentals during small group. This will be Part one of two in this reading skills focused project.
My ELL students are friendly, strong, and resilient. They are eager to learn and experience new things in their new surroundings, but are sometimes challenged by the things that make their new life exciting. Some have just arrived to the United States and are not only learning English but are also adjusting to a new culture......IPads will give student access to many valuable apps and software such as Osmo that will further enrich language. Such software can foster creativity and problem-solving skills through hands-on play. ELL students need visual support and plenty of hands-on experiences to actively learn English.
My Project
Having these iPads will allow for different structures of learning in my dual language classroom. Students will be able to use apps to reinforce their pre-reading skills. Another way will be to eventually incorporate with an OSMO or "Learning Panda", hopefully in the near future in a Part 2 project. Students would be able to use the iPads during their reading centers/small group rotations which would allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling students. All my students could benefit from the technology hands-on interaction that so many of them don't have access to.
Our classrooms are not yet at the level technologically to meet their needs as learners.
I currently have two working computers in my classroom of twenty students (one of them with no sound). This project will help to close that gap just a little bit more.
